Why is it that in the entrepreneurial world, there are so many determined, intelligent, creative, confident and successful professionals struggling to make their own businesses successful?
I found myself wondering why… why do these people have such a difficult time with their own home businesses? These people are extremely successful in their education and careers, and yet, they flounder and fail with their own business.

After struggling with this issue initially myself, I think I have figured out the two main reasons why…
Being successful in your own business, whether its network marketing/direct sales or something similar, requires:
1) entirely different skills and proficiencies from the corporate world, and
2) an entirely different mindset from the corporate world.
These are two things that I have really had to work on, on a daily basis, to get myself out of the ‘job’ mode/mentality and into the true entrepreneur mode and mentality. And once I accomplished that, I started finding success.
1) Professional v. Entrepreneurial Skills
Typically, in order to succeed in a profession, you must develop a specific specialty or area of expertise. Usually, there is only one main area of expertise required for success in a job or career. It’s the one thing that someone has been trained in and/or gone to school for, and excels at, and it is why they are hired.
They tend to remain in that profession, and as they do, they improve in their job performance and their skills, and the goal is to eventually be promoted.
Unfortunately, I’ve seen far too many instances where someone was excelling at their specific job, and when they were promoted, they struggled. Especially if the promotion bestows upon them more management responsibilities. While they may have been quite capable of successfully doing their specific skill, they were not experienced in a managerial role, and they didn’t have the necessary skills to succeed as a manager and leader.
I’ve found that when many of these successful professionals choose to start their own home businesses, they run into the same problem.
They step into a world that they have no experience with… they are bright, intelligent and capable of figuring things out… but they become overwhelmed by the enormity of everything involved with owning their own business and making it successful.
There are so many factors and facets involved in owning a business, and these professionals (myself included in the beginning) don’t have a clue how to go about getting those things done. Running your own business requires you to be a manager, assistant, accountant, payroll director, technical support person, and so many more rolls…
And that is precisely the reason that I moved away from the idea of being a life coach and the coach business model, which involved me doing so many of those things, and into the network marketing business model… where the majority of those functions are actually performed by the company itself… phew!
But, even the network marketing/direct sales business model has its requirements… you still need to be a marketer, a sales person, a manager and a leader, along with various other rolls.
What I’ve observed is that the people who have succeeded, including myself, are the people who are able to accomplish two things.
First, they take full responsibility for their weaknesses and areas where they need help.
Second, they find a ’team’ to support them, train them and to guide them each step of the way.
I am not talking about the hoards of ‘trainings’ out on the internet today… I am talking about a true team, with true leaders and training systems in place. And these trainings and systems are included with the team… not something people have to go out and pay additional money for… In my experience, when someone has to go outside of their team in order to find support, they are not going to make it very far with that business.
2) Professional v. Entrepreneurial Mindset
Your Mindset controls your destiny… literally… and as an employee, this concept is utterly foreign. As an employee, you simply do as you are told, fill the role you are taught to fill, and you just move through the motions each and every day. I know… I did it my entire professional career, and looking back, I cannot recall a single business associate who had any inkling about what “personal development” or “self-growth” was all about…
However, entrepreneurs are keenly aware of the fact that your mindset is how you THINK about things and what you BELIEVE, and that your thinking and believing is what controls your destiny.
In my experience, employers simply DO NOT encourage personal development or self-growth. Probably because if they did, their employees would realize that they could do much better for themselves by being their own bosses!
I have come to realize that starting your own business is probably the greatest personal development journey you will ever embark upon. You can take all the right steps, and if your mindset isn’t right, you still won’t achieve what you want. It makes it difficult to actually follow your dreams.
Self Confidence and Belief in Yourself/Your Business
One of the most important mindsets for an entrepreneur is that of Self-Confidence. You have to believe in yourself, in your ability to succeed, and you also must believe in what it is you have to offer.
Self confidence is key.
If you don’t believe in what you do 110%, and in it’s ability to make a real difference in your prospect’s lives, then you are going to have a very difficult time convincing anyone else.
You must believe it first.
And sometimes, it’s hard to believe it when you’ve never done it before… when you’ve never experienced success at it… when you’ve never seen it ‘really’ work for you… and when everyone else around you is telling you that you are crazy and that it will never work… that you should simply stay in your job making a steady paycheck…
But, if you let those limiting thoughts take control of you, it will mean utter doom for your business. You must take steps daily to confirm your belief in yourself, in your ability to succeed, and in the integrity of your business and its ability to truly help others.
Conquering Fear
The only difference between the people who are succeeding and the people who are still struggling to find success is that those people who are successful don’t let fear stand in their way. Successful people may indeed feel the fear, but they don’t let it paralyze them…. they act in spite of the fear… they let it go and push through.
It’s the people who consistently let go of their fear who eventually become successful in their business.
Recognize that there will be mistakes along the way, they are simply part of the journey. And instead of getting discouraged because things don’t go the way you planned, and instead of labeling things as mistakes, simply accept things as being exactly as they are supposed to be, and figure out what lessons you can learn from them.
Just realize that fear is a natural part of growing, and there may be a few bumps and twists and curves along the way, but simply keep moving forward. Let go of the fear, let go of the expectations, and look for the lessons.
Consistently applying this mindset will enable you to completely transform your business.
I’ve been there. I know what it’s like. And I still move through fear every day. And one of the keys to being able to move through the fear, in addition to helping you believe in yourself, is to have an incredible support group. Before finding my support group, my ‘team,’ I was having a very difficult time working through my fear and believing in myself. But I’ve found that with their continuous, unwavering support, I’ve been able to push through the fear and find the self-confidence I needed to make my business successful.
So, in order to truly succeed with your own business, you absolutely must have a support system in place. That support system will help guide you through learning the necessary skill set for owning your own business, and it will be instrumental in the personal growth you must experience in order to develop the right mindset to be successful.
